Stray Bullet Srikes Woman Inside Her Home in Newark's West Ward

Police in Newark are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital overnight.

It happened in the vicinity of Abinger Place and Norwood Street just before 2:20 a.m. where reports of shots fired sent police to the West Ward community.

According to preliminary reports, police canvassing the scene found the female victims inside a residence suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

EMS rushed the woman to University Hospital where doctors began treating the woman for non-life threatening injuries reports said.

Police believe that gunfire erupted in the neighborhood which had a bullet penetrate the door of the woman's house then striking her.

Officer reportedly found about three shell casings in the vicinity of 34 Norwood Place but after an extensive search of the neighborhood, there were no other injuries.

The shooter remains at-large.
