Stolen Car Chase Comes to a Halt in Union; Suspect in Custody

Kenilworth Union Township (Union)

A police pursuit of a stolen vehicle this morning came to an abrupt end when the suspect vehicle crashed into a car near a Union intersection.

While on patrol in the area of 2000 Galloping Hill Road, Officer Travis Dilts received a License Plate Reader (LPR) “hit” for a stolen vehicle traveling through the Borough.

Officer Dilts then attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop of the vehicle by getting behind it with his emergency lights activated but the driver of the stolen vehicle - later identified as James Redington of Roselle Park - accelerated at a high rate of speed.

Shortly after doing so, Redington struck a vehicle headed in the opposite direction at the intersection of Freeman Circle and Galloping Hill Road in Union.

The driver of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries but was accessed at the scene by Union EMS.

Redington was immediately taken into custody by Kenilworth Police Officers following the crash.

He sustained moderate injuries and was transported to UMDNJ hospital in Newark.

The suspect was later charged with eluding police, receiving stolen property and assault by auto.

He was released pending a scheduled appearance in Superior Court in Elizabeth.

The Ford Escape was reported stolen out of Kenilworth on April 26, according to police.
