Snow Machines Steal the Show at Belleville’s Holiday Kickoff Event

Belleville

Belleville’s annual Christmas tree lighting drew thousands to the Belleville High School lawn on Saturday, turning the area into a festive winter scene complete with artificial snow, a synthetic ice rink, and holiday activities for all ages.

According to township officials, the crowd counted down as Santa prepared to light the tree, but before the switch was flipped, high-powered snow machines sent a flurry of white across the sky, surprising residents and setting a cheerful tone for the evening.

The snow wasn’t the only new attraction.

One of the biggest hits of the night was a synthetic ice skating surface where children glided under the full moon.

Nearby, kids fueled by hot chocolate from the Belleville Police Department launched soft, plush “snowballs” in friendly battles.

Event organizers said they aim to make each year’s celebration stand out with fresh features that complement the traditional favorites.

Families lined up for photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, explored the hay bale maze, and rode the trackless train.

More than 3,000 attendees enjoyed food trucks, vendor huts, illuminated performers, and a petting area with farm animals.

Town departments played key roles in bringing the event to life, with the Recreation Department coordinating activities and Public Works crews handling setup and teardown.

Volunteers and township staff also helped keep the large crowd moving safely. Parking enforcement officer Debbie Nardone assisted pedestrians crossing Division Avenue as horse-drawn carriages made their way up and down the block.

On the lawn, children wrote letters to Santa with help from the Michael Melham Civic Association, sharing wish lists ranging from video games to ponies.

Mayor Michael Melham said the celebration brings out the best of the community each year, noting the smiles and the “special glow” that fills the town during the holiday season.
