ShotSpotter Device Detects Gunfire in Newark's South Ward

Newark Police officials are investigating a shooting incident in the city's South Ward Thursday night. 

It happened around 11:30 p.m. near 49 Wainwright Avenue. 

Police say a ShotSpotter device activated and alerted officers of a shooting in the area of Wainwright and Nye. 

Newark Emergency Services Unit arrived at the scene and found a half dozen shell casings, but a search of the area indicated no victims. 

The suspect fled the scene and is at large. 

Police have not released a motive for the shooting at this time.
