ShotSpotter Device Detects Gunfire Near Newark South Ward Gas Station

Newark

Police in Newark are looking for suspects responsible for a shooting incident that erupted near a gas station in the city's South Ward on Tuesday morning.

A ShotSpotter device activated and alerted police of gunfire in the vicinity of 499 Frelinghuysen Avenue around 2:38 a.m.

When officers arrived at the scene, they taped off the area around the Mobile gas station after finding multiple shell casings at that location.

While the investigation is active, police believe two vehicles pulled up at the station and began exchanging gunfire before speeding from the scene and were last observed in the area of Elizabeth Avenue and Bigelow Street.

Authorities are looking for a white SUV and a dark-colored Chrysler 300 occupied by several male suspects.

Police reported no serious injuries resulting from the shooting.
