A shooting that left one person dead in a Newark neighborhood during the overnight has authorities investigating a motive for the incident.

In the second violent fatal shooting that occurred during the overnight in Newark, police responded to a ShotSpotter activation that alerted police of a shooting in the vicinity of 489 7th Avenue shortly before 2:45 a.m.

First arriving police officers closed off the area after finding a severely injured person suffering gunshot wounds at that location.

EMS units were requested on a rush as the victim's condition began to deteriorate according to preliminary reports.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has returned a public information request of the incident and has only confirmed a fatality early in the investigation.

There were no arrests made in the shooting.
