Shots rang out on Bergen Avenue near Stegman Street after a man threatened to kill his wife this afternoon.
According to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill, police responded to the scene just after 12:40 p.m. for reports of a possible hostage situation.
Upon arrivals officers heard the man yelling that he wanted to be killed by police.
Shortly after the Emergency Services Unit and a hostage negotiator arrival, the armed man fired two rounds at officers from a window.
Within an hour, officers gained access to the apartment, rescued the woman and arrested the armed suspect.
According to officials, two guns were later recovered from the apartment.
The female victim was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health with non-life threatening injuries, she sustained after her husband assaulted her.
No other injuries were reported.
Charges against the shooter are pending.
