Shooting in Newark's South Ward Injures Man

Police are on the search for a dark colored vehicle that resembled a race car when it sped away from the scene of a shooting that injured a man in the city's South Ward this evening.

Reports of shots fired that rang out in the 100 block of Mapes Ave. sent police to the scene to investigate shortly before 7 p.m.

Arriving units located evidence that a shooting had occurred, but no victim.

A search of several blocks had officers locate the victim on Bergen and Renner Ave. suffering gunshot wounds to the legs. He was rushed to University Hospital where his injuries was not believed to be life threatening at this time.

The wanted vehicle had tinted windows and a muffler that was dragging on the ground when the occupants fled the scene.

Police have Bergen and Renner closed to traffic for the investigation. There is also a crime scene on Mapes Ave.

The suspect fired nearly a dozen rounds at the victim.
