Shooting in Newark's South Ward Injures Man

Officers from the New Jersey State Police who were patrolling an area of the city followed a vehicle that sped away from the scene of a shooting in the city's South Ward.

Gunfire erupted in the area of Chancellor Ave. at Schley Street shortly before 10:45 p.m. had police observe a vehicle flee the scene. Officers lost sight of the vehicle a short distance away.

Officials from the University Hospital contacted police when a male victim arrived to the emergency department of the hospital suffering a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim's injury was not reported to be life threatening.

Authorities set up a crime scene in the area where they searched for evidence. A crime scene was also setup in the 200 block of Weequahic Ave. between Clinton and Maple Ave. where they searched for the the suspect.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
