Detectives from Newark’s Shooting Response Team are investigating a shots-fired incident that occurred near a South Ward high school football field on Saturday evening.

The gunfire erupted in the vicinity of 38 Johnson Avenue, near Malcolm X Shabazz High School, prompting residents to take cover inside their homes.

An initial investigation indicated that a ShotSpotter device detected the gunfire and alerted police, who were already en route to the scene.

When officers arrived, they secured the area and searched for evidence and potential victims.

During the investigation, police determined that one individual who was initially believed to have been shot was actually injured while attempting to flee the scene.

The suspect fled before police arrived and remains at large.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation.
