Police are investigating an early morning shooting that happened outside a restaurant on Route 440 in the city.
A male victim who was transported by private vehicle to Jersey City Medical Center shortly before 4:15 a.m. had hospital officials contact police for the critically injured patient struck by apparent gunfire.
According to initial reports, the victim was shot multiple times to the chest and was administered CPR by the medical staff at the hospital where he condition was listed as critical. The man was pronounced dead a short time later.
Police learned that the shooting had occurred just outside the IHOP on Communipaw Ave. at Rt. 440 where arriving units located several shell casing at the scene.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
There were no arrests reported.
