Shooting Leaves One Fatally Injured in Elizabeth; Police Apprehend Several Suspects

Elizabeth

An overnight shooting in Elizabeth left one person dead during an apparent armed robbery.

Gunfire rang out in the area of East Jersey Street and Jaques Street shortly after 10 p.m. striking a male victim in the chest. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police patrolling the area during the time of the shooting, chased down two possible suspects a short distance away. Further investigations at the scene had police searching for at least two other suspects (only described as black males) possibly occupying a silver Mercedes.

Police gave chase to the suspected vehicle on Frelinghuysen Ave. where two men bailed out on the 100 block of Elizabeth Ave. in Newark.

Officers from Newark, Essex County Sheriff Department, and State Police assisted in the capture of at least two additional suspects after a brief foot pursuit. It is still not clear if these individuals are responsible for the fatality.

The identity of the victim has been withheld pending notification of family.

The fatal shooting is under investigation by the Union County Prosecutor's Office.
