Shooting Injures Child in Newark's Central Ward

There is an active and ongoing investigation into a shooting that injured a child in Newark's Central Ward Friday night.

According to a preliminary investigation, a ShotSpotter activation alerted police of gunfire that rang out near 88 17th Avenue around 10 p.m.

Officers from a nearby police precinct were first on the scene, where they found a male, around the age of 12-years -old, bleeding from his back after being struck by gunfire at that location.

Police say the victim was rushed to University Hospital for treatment and remained in stable condition. Police said the teen was released from the hospital Saturday morning.

Officers taped off the area in search of suspects and other possible victims, but neither were found.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
