Shooters Fired Rounds on Newark-East Orange Border; Hospital Walk-in Victim

Police in Newark are searching for a possible connection between a violent shots-fired incident in the city's West Ward and a walk-in shooting victim at University Hospital on Thursday evening.

According to police, at approximately 4:40 p.m., a ShotSpotter device activated on Chelsea Avenue, prompting a police investigation.

East Orange and Newark Police arrived in the area. They began checking for evidence near Rhode Island and Tremont avenues when Newark authorities found shell casings on their side of the border.

Officials notified hospitals in the region to be on the lookout for potential walk-in gunshot victims.

At approximately 4:50 p.m, University Hospital officials alerted police of a person who entered the emergency department suffering a bullet wound.

Newark 4th Precinct officers arrived at the hospital to initiate the investigation and ascertain where the shooting occurred.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined at this time.
