Serious Injuries Reported after Gunfire Erupts at Newark Ironbound Portuguese Feast

Police in Newark are investigating a shooting that occurred in the city's Ironbound section overnight.

Gunfire erupted in the area of Ferry and Prospect streets during the annual Portuguese Feast at around 11:45 p.m. sending police to the scene where officers found two people shot at that location.

EMS transported the victims to University Hospital with one of the victims suffering a gunshot injury to the abdomen and while the other suffered a gunshot injury in the arm according to preliminary reports. It is not clear if the male and female victims were the intended targets.

Dozens of festival goers began to run from the area when gunfire rang out causing a stampede and several others to suffer minor injuries.

One other person received medical attention after being struck by a vehicle during the incident reports said.
