Separate Newark Shootings Leave One Dead, Another Injured

Newark

Two instances of shooting violence that occurred in separate Newark neighborhoods overnight left one person dead, another injured, and authorities investigating.

In the first incident, police were called to 200 block of Sunset Avenue in Newark's West Ward after receiving calls of suspicious activities shortly before 9:45 p.m.

Officers arrived and found an injured person at that location according to reports.

While police taped off the area to search for evidence to support a motive for the shooting, the victim was assisted by emergency medical technicians.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office could not confirm a homicide investigation for the shooting.

In the remaining incident, a chaotic scene unfolded in Newark's South Ward where gunfire erupted on Frelinghuysen Avenue at around 9:35 p.m.

Police rushed to the scene where they found one person suffering gunshot wounds at that location.

Several officers canvassing the area for evidence found a vehicle occupied by suspects wanted in connection with the shooting.

According to reports, when police attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect sped off and tried to flee from police.

The suspect's vehicle crashed into a truck, then overturned near the intersection Elizabeth Avenue and West Alpine.

Police engaged in a brief foot pursuit before they apprehended the suspect a short distance away.

There was at least one other person injured during the pursuit, but we could not immediately confirm the victim's identity or the severity of the injury as of 4:41 a.m.

We were only able to confirm **"life-threatening**" injuries for the Frelinghuysen Avenue shooting victim.

Both shootings remain under investigation.
