Newark

‘He said he was the super for the building and that the landlord told him to come down here because it was a leak in the backyard. I screamed to get out of my house! I'm calling the police.

Police in Newark are investigating a reported burglary that had the suspect enter an apartment and steal multiple items while residents were at homes Tuesday.

According to a preliminary investigation, the early morning forced entry burglary happened in a multi-family building in the single-digit block of Hillside Avenue around 3:27 a.m.

Burglary

Reports say a female resident awakened after hearing someone banging on a wall inside the apartment. She then observed a man inside her home after he tore through the wall.

While the man scrambled to take several items from the residence, the woman confronted the suspect, who reportedly told her that he was the superintendent and was sent by the building's owner to fix the wall.

Burglary

The suspect pried open an old wooden entrance door that was only blocked by sheetrock, making it an easy way to get inside the apartment.

The woman dialed 911 requesting help, but police reportedly arrived at the scene around 7 a.m.

No physical injuries were reported.
