Sayreville Man Accused of Selling Stolen Medical Records

Sayreville East Brunswick Somerset County

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief James Conroy of the East Brunswick Police Department said a Sayreville man was arrested today and charged with selling medical records that he stole from a storage unit in East Brunswick.

Fernando Rios, 33, was arrested today on one count of identity theft, one count of trafficking in personally identifying information and one count of burglary.

He was charged during a joint investigation with Homeland Security Investigations, Detectives Jonathan Berman and Kevin Schroeck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and the East Brunswick Police Department.

During the investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations,   it was determined that Rios broke into a storage facility in East Brunswick, which housed the records of a medical practice of three doctors from East Brunswick and Somerset. Over 1,000 medical records which contained personal information of patients were stolen and then sold.

The investigation is active and is continuing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jonathan Berman at ‪(732) 745-4328‬ or Detective Kevin Schroeck at ‪(732) 745-3927 ‬of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Rios are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
