Public Works Employees Taken to Hospital After Battery Explosion in Union Twp.

Two township public works employees were taken to a hospital after a vehicle battery exploded Wednesday morning. 

Sergio Panunzio, Superintendant of Public Works said two department employees were transported to St. Barnabas Medical Center Burn Unit after suffering injuries when a vehicle battery exploded. 

Both employees were taken to the hospital as a precaution due to the potential exposure to acid burn. 

They were both treated and released shortly thereafter with minor cuts to face from flying debris, added Paninzio.

The department contacted PESOH  and Union County Haz-Mat  as protocol dictate.

Panunzio added that initial investigations suggests that the cold temperatures may have played a role in the explosion. 

Incident is currently under investigation is being conducted by Union  Police .

The equipment has been decontaminated and returned, to the fleet ready to be deployed.

Both employees are scheduled to return to work.
