Prosecutor Releases Identity of Man Fatally Wounded by Gunfire in Newark's North Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting earlier this morning  in Newark, NJ.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Fourth Street shortly after 5:00 a.m. according to authorities. Newark police officers responded to the area on a report of a shooting and observed an unresponsive male, outside a residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

The victim, who has been identified Edison Javier Vasquez Naranjo, age 27 of Newark, was rushed to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:47 a.m. The incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is ongoing at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit authorities said.
