Police notified hospitals in the region to be on the lookout for a potential walk-in gunshot victim after officers located a pool of blood at the scene of a shots-fired incident Wednesday night.
According to police, gunfire rang out in the area of Crane and Broadway just before 10 p.m., prompting a police investigation.
Several Newark North Ward officers arrived at the scene and found multiple shell casings and a trail of blood that led cops to the vicinity of Clay Street and Mount Pleasant Avenue.
Witnesses in the area told police that they observed a male suffering a bullet wound, but police could not locate the injured person.
Newark Police will handle the active and ongoing investigation.
