Newark police are investigating a Monday night shooting that left one man injured and prompted a large search inside a city housing complex.

According to preliminary reports, officers patrolling near 51 Littleton Avenue heard several rounds of gunfire and immediately alerted headquarters.
Additional units were dispatched to the scene, where officers found a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds.
Emergency Medical Services rushed the man to University Hospital, though his condition has not yet been confirmed.
Detectives believe that three suspects opened fire on the victim before fleeing.
In a surprising twist, police said the suspects later returned to the scene, sparking a pursuit through several parts of Newarkâs Central Ward.
The chase eventually led authorities into Pilgrim Village, where officers searched for the individuals and what they believe was a fanny pack containing the weapon used in the crime.

No arrests have been announced as of early Tuesday morning, and the incident remains under active investigation.
