Police Make Arrest in Paterson Shooting

Police announce the arrest of a 21-year-old Paterson man wanted in connection to a shooting that occurred on July 5th.

Alexander Nieves was arrested yesterday by the Paterson Police Department in the area of Dale Avenue for the July 5th shooting that injured a 23-year-old Paterson man.

Nieves was charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Certain Persons not to Possess Weapons.

According to police, on July 5th, police responded to a shooting incident at 36 Rosa Parks Boulevard, Paterson,.

As a result a male victim suffered a single gunshot wound and was immediately transported to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment and was later released.

Based on the investigation, Nieves was identified as one of the suspects and subsequently arrested.

The sentencing exposure on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of those terms to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act, five years parole supervision thereafter; on Second Degree Aggravated Assault it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of that term to be served before parole eligibility pursuant to the No Early Release Act, three years parole supervision thereafter; on Second Degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 3 1⁄2 years before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 3 1⁄2 years before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Certain Persons not to Possess Weapons it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 5 years of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act.

Alexander Nieves is scheduled to appear at on September 14th.

The State filed intends to file a motion for pretrial detention that will be heard at a later date by a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
