Police Involved Shooting Leaves Dog Shot in Newark's South Ward

Essex County authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting that left a dog shot early this morning in Newark.

Details are developing, but according to preliminary reports, the South Ward incident happened in the 200 block of Hunterdon Street shortly before 2:50 a.m.

Police opened fire on the dog after it mauled a woman official said.

EMS transported the female victim to University Hospital suffering non-life threatening dog bite wounds while two officers received precautionary treatments but was not bitten by the dog according to reports.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office were called to scene to assist in the investigation.

**NPD UPDATED 10:10am:** Shortly before 3 a.m., officers patrolling the 200-block of Hunterdon Street, observed a woman being attacked by a dog. The woman ran towards the officers, who both fired their weapons, striking the animal. EMS transported the victim to University Hospital for treatment. The wounded dog has been transported to the ASPCA and is in their care.
