Authorities are investigating a Wednesday night shooting in Newark’s South Ward after a ShotSpotter device alerted police to gunfire in the area.
According to officials, the alert was triggered around 8:40 p.m. near 192 Hunterdon Street.
Responding officers arrived on the scene and located several shell casings, prompting a request for the department’s Shooting Response Team to assist in the investigation.

A canvass of the neighborhood did not turn up any victims, and no injuries were reported.
Police believe the suspect fled the area before officers arrived and remains at large.
The motive for the shooting is unknown, and no further information was immediately available.
The investigation remains ongoing.
