Newark authorities are investigating a Friday night shooting in the city’s Ironbound section, the third reported gunfire incident in a 24-hour span that left one man dead and another severely wounded elsewhere in the city.

According to preliminary information, a ShotSpotter device alerted police to gunfire near 199 Pennington Street shortly before 8:30 p.m.
When officers arrived, they discovered shell casings and a large crowd gathered in the area.
The situation prompted police to call for backup to secure the scene.
Investigators searched for victims but confirmed that the gunfire struck no one. The suspect fled before police arrived and remains at large.
The Ironbound shooting capped a violent 24 hours across Newark.
Earlier in the morning, a 23-year-old man was fatally shot inside a vehicle in the city’s West Ward, while another victim was critically injured in a separate Central Ward shooting.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation into the deadly West Ward attack.
