Police Investigate Fatal Shooting in Elizabeth, $5K Reward Offered

An Elizabeth shooting that left one person dead and another injured late Monday afternoon is under investigation, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park and Elizabeth Police Chief Patrick Shannon announced this afternoon.

The deceased victim has been identified as Michael Gibbs, 32, of Beverly, New Jersey, a small city in Burlington County.

It was shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday when shots were fired near the area of Jackson Avenue and Bond Street in Elizabeth. Gibbs was struck by gunfire and rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second victim, an Elizabeth resident, was shot and transported to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The shooting is under joint investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force and the Elizabeth Police Department.

As of midday Tuesday, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
