Police Identify Man Fatally Shot near Elementary School in Newark

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced today that the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating a fatal shooting.

At approximately 7:42 am today Newark Police responded to the 200 block of South 9th Street on a report of a shooting. When they arrived they discovered Hassan W. Scott, 37, of Newark unresponsive. The victim was transported to University of Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:06 am.

The preliminary investigation indicates Scott was exiting his home heading to the car to take his three children, ages two, four and nine to day care, when he was shot multiple times. 

The investigation is active an ongoing. At this time, the motive has not been determined. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified.
