Police Arrest Lodi Bank Robbery Suspect

Lodi New Jersey

Maywood officers quickly apprehended an armed New York man accused of robbing a Lodi bank earlier today.

According to police, officers responded to the Hudson City Savings Bank on the 300 block of Essex Street at approximately 2:43 p.m. for a holdup alarm.

The suspect - later identified as 38-year-old Michael J. Cassano of Oakland Gardens, New York - entered the bank wearing a black fedora and sunglasses.

Cassano approached the teller, placed a black handgun (later identified as a bb gun) on the counter and demanded money.

The teller handed Cassano $4,000 in cash. He then fled the area, police added.

According to police, Cassano stopped for a cup of coffee at a local Dunkin Donuts then approached a man and asked for a cigarette.

As he walked to where his vehicle was parked he was stopped by Sgt. Timothy Moran and PO. Glenn Tutschek of the Maywood Police Department.

Maywood officers found the Cassano with the weapon and cash in his possession.

He was charge with first degree robbery and 2 other weapons offenses.

Bail was not set as of 7 this evening. Federal charges are also pending, said police.

The second party arrested initially believed to be an accomplice was found to have no involvement and was subsequently released.
