Phone Scam Bilks 87-Year-Old Linden Woman Out of $14K

Linden

Another Linden resident has fallen victim to what police say is one of several telephone scams out there targeting the elderly.

On November 25, police took a report of a fraud from an 87-year-old Linden woman.

The woman told officers that she had received a call from a “David Kelly of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office”. The caller told the victim that she needed to send money immediately because her son was “currently in jail”.

During the next three days, from November 22nd to the 25th, the woman used several bank and credit cards to purchase $14,000 of iTunes cards. The woman was then instructed to read the activation codes to the caller.

On November 25th, the woman’s son arrived at his mother’s house and when the victim asked if he was okay from “being in jail”, he realized that she had been scammed.

Police warn residents that this is one of several types of telephone scams being perpetrated on unsuspecting victims, often targeting the elderly.

Police urge residents to hang up the phone and contact the police department if they receive a suspicious phone call.
