Perth Amboy Motorist Charged in Hit-and-Run

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Acting Chief Roman McKeon of the Perth Amboy Police Department said today that a city man has been arrested and charged with fleeing after striking a pedestrian with his car.

Edwin Viera, 53, of Perth Amboy was charged with leaving the scene of the accident and obstruction after hitting the victim, an 83-year-old city resident who remains hospitalized.

Bail has been set at $10,000.

The case is being investigated by Detective Jessica DeJesus of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Donald Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

During the investigation it was determined that Viera was parked on Lawrie Street on December 16, 2016, backed his 1998 Honda Civic into the Penn Street intersection and struck the victim, who was crossing Penn Street at 9:45 p.m.

Viera drove from the scene, but surrendered to police on December 22, 2016.

The victim is being treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he is listed in critical condition.

The investigation is active and is continuing.
