Perth Amboy Hit-and-Run Victim Succumbs to His Injuries

Perth Amboy

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Acting Chief Roman McKeon of the Perth Amboy Police Department said today that an 83-year-old pedestrian has died after being struck last week by a hit-and-run driver.

Percio Hernandez of Perth Amboy was pronounced dead on Monday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was taken after he was struck on Dec. 16th.

The results of an autopsy by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner’s Office were not immediately available, but it appeared the victim died of injuries sustained when he was hit by a 1998 Honda Civic that was being driven by Edwin Viera, 53, of Perth Amboy.

Viera fled the scene after striking the victim as he was crossing on Penn Street.

The driver later surrendered to authorities and was charged with leaving the scene of the accident and obstruction.

An investigation by Detective Jessica DeJesus of the Perth Amboy Police Department and Detective Donald Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that the driver, who was parked on Lawrie Street, backed his car onto Penn Street, hit the pedestrian, and fled.

No new charges have been filed, but the investigation is active and is continuing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective DeJesus of the Perth Amboy Police Department at (732) 442-4400, or Detective Heck of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at (732) 745-8842.
