City officials have confirmed that the man that died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday is the Perth Amboy fire chief.
According to city officials, Chief Abraham Pitre, 44, was a member of the fire department for 23 years.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been released.
Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz posted the following statement Sunday:
"Our hearts are heavy and it is with deep sadness that I ask you to uplift up in prayer the family of Fire Chief Abraham Pitre and the Perth Amboy Fire Department. May he rest in peace. You will be missed, Pitre!"
