Pennsauken Man Charged with Attempted Murder of His Girlfriend

Pennsauken Township

Authorities announce that Anthony Ortiz, 29, of Pennsauken, was charged with the attempted murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend after a shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon.

Pennsauken police responded at approximately 12:51 p.m. to a to 9-1-1 call for a woman who was shot on the 2200 block of Gross Avenue in Pennsauken.

Officials said that when officers arrived, they located the victim on the floor suffering from a single gunshot wound inside her home. The woman was rushed to Cooper University Hospital by EMS and Paramedics, where she is currently being treated.

An investigation into the shooting determined that Anthony Ortiz, who lived with the victim, got into an argument with the victim inside their home. Ortiz allegedly grabbed a handgun during the argument and fired a single shot, hitting his girlfriend in the head.

Police charged Anthony Ortiz with one count of first degree Attempted Murder the same day as the shooting, according to Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Pennsauken Police Chief John Coffey. He was also charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, and Aggravated Assault.

He was processed at the Pennsauken Police Department and then remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending a pretrial detention hearing.

Under recent Criminal Justice Reform rules, the court may order he be detained or released with conditions.

The investigation is ongoing, and the name of the victim is not being released at this time.

All persons charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
