Pedestrian Killed by Car That Fled The Scene in Newark

City and County authorities are investigating a hit and run that left a woman dead in Newark's West Ward overnight.

According to authorities, emergency responders rushed to the intersection of South Orange and North Munn avenues just before 1 a.m. for reports of an injured person at that location.

Units arriving at the scene found the unconscious and unresponsive female victim severe injuries after a vehicle struck her then sped away from the scene authorities said.

Medical crews pronounced the unidentified victim dead at the scene.

According to preliminary reports, police are looking for a white or light-colored vehicle, possibly a BMW, which witnesses said struck the woman.

Detectives for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office were on the scene to handle the investigation that's active and ongoing.
