Paterson Man Faces Charges After Shooting Himself

Authorities announced the arrest of a 23-year-old Paterson man wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred on October 1st.

According to police, on October 1st, members of the Paterson Police Department were flagged down in front of 253 Broadway in Paterson by a “Good Samaritan” who allegedly stated there was a shotgun near the entrance of 253 Broadway.

Police located and recovered the shotgun authorities said.

Police canvassing the area found Dinnick Mahoney in front of 190 Hamilton Avenue in Paterson suffering from a non-fatal gunshot wound. EMS immediately transported Mahoney to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center for treatment.

An investigation revealed that Mahoney allegedly shot himself. As a result, authorities charged Mahoney with Unlawful Possession of a Sawed-Off Shotgun, Unlawful Possession of Shotgun and Certain Person Not to Have Weapons.

If convicted, the maximum aggregate sentencing exposure for an ordinary term in this matter would be ten years in New Jersey State Prison and must serve a minimum of 60 months before parole eligibility.

The Graves Act also applies which 42 months is required.

Mahoney is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing Court in Paterson on October 18th at 1:30 p.m.

The State intends to file a motion seeking the defendant’s pretrial detention which will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite an accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
