Overturned Tanker Causes Diesel Fuel Spill on Rt. 1 in Linden

A truck that crashed then overturned on Rt. 1 in Linden cause a fuel spill that closed a portion of the road.

According to authorities, at approximately 12:15 a.m., on Linden Police and Fire units responded to reports of motor vehicle collision on the 1100 block of East Edgar Rd (US Route 1).

Police said as a result of the crash, a tanker truck overturned and spilled as much as 1500 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway.

There are no injuries reported, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Police, Fire, and OEM personnel are on scene, along with Union County Hazmat crews.

NJDOT and EPA officials have also been notified.US Route 1 is closed northbound at S. Wood Ave until further notice.

Westbound traffic on I-278 from the Goethels Bridge toward the Phillips 66 refinery entrance will also be affected.

The cleanup is expected to take several hours and may impact the morning commute.

UPDATE 6:28 a.m. As a result of an earlier overturned tank truck and diesel fuel spill, Rt. 1 NB and Rt. 278 WB will remain closed for an undetermined amount of time while cleanup occurs. Please avoid the affected area and stay tuned for future updates.
