Overnight Shooting in Newark Injures Woman

There is an active investigation underway into a shooting that injured a woman in Newark's South Ward late last night.

Reports of shots fired and loud screams from a female voice sent police to the area of Sherman Ave. and Vanderpool Ave. shortly before 11:30 p.m. where they arrived to the scene to find evidence of a possible shooting but no victim.

Units reportedly searched the area where they later located a female victim suffering an apparent gunshot wound to the back.

The woman was transported to University Hospital in Newark where she was listed in serious but stable condition.

Police began a search for a black male suspect who was last seen fleeing the area on Sherman Ave.

The investigation is being handled by the Newark Police Department.
