Overnight Shooting Injures Man Near Rutgers Newark Campus

Police in Newark are investigating an overnight shooting that injured a male near the Rutgers Newark Campus.

According to police, at approximately 10:35 p.m., Rutgers University Police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of Halsey Street and Central Avenue near the Central Diner.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a male suffering from gunshot wounds at that location.

Police say the victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment and remain in stable condition.

According to reports, a black male suspect brandished a gun and began to fire multiple times in the victim's direction.

Police began a search for the suspect who was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans, and dreads. A possible suspect was detained in the 40's block of Bleeker Street.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
