Overnight Shooting Incident Causes Injuries in Newark

Newark Police are investigating a shooting incident that sent one per to the hospital suffering injuries early Sunday morning.

The incident happened just before 2:45 a.m. on Bergen Street between 14th Avenue and South Orange Avenue where police responded to a ShotSpotter activation.

Upon their arrival, police immediately taped off the area after finding evidence that a shooting occurred, but there were no victims located according to preliminary reports.

Officials at University Hospital contacted police when two injured victims entered the emergency department a short time after the shooting.

One of the victims did suffer a gunshot injury while officials said the second victim sustained severe injuries but was not shot. It appears the victim was injured after attempting to flee the scene of the shooting according to reports.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
