Overnight Newark West Ward Shooting Victim Dies

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting early Monday morning in Newark, NJ.

 The incident occurred in the 1000 block of South Orange Avenue shortly after 2:00 a.m.Newark police officers responded to this area on a report of shots fired. Arriving officers determined that a male was shot at that location and that he had been transported to University Hospital. 

The victim, who has been identified as Kazemde Zahiratu, age 21 of Newark, was pronounced dead at 3:51 a.m.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. The investigation is ongoing at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.
