One Injured After Gunfire Erupts in Paterson

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald announced that at approximately 9:06, p.m. Saturday, members of the Paterson Police Department responded to the area of Atlantic Street and Newark Avenue on a report of a burglary.

Officials say upon officer’s arrival, police located a 37-year-old male Paterson resident suffering a non-fatal gunshot wound and was seeking refuge inside a house.

Police say homeowners mistakenly thought the victim seeking refuge was a burglar and called the police.

EMS transported victim to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson for treatment.

Based on the initial investigation, police said the victim was in the area of Atlantic Street and Newark Avenue when several males exited a blue vehicle and attacked him.

During the assault, the victim was shot by one of the attackers.

Police say the victim then sought refuge in a residence.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
