One person was taken into custody after a high-speed pursuit of a stolen car began in Union County and ended in Newark's South Ward overnight.

Union Township Police began to follow a white 2017 Kia Sportage after the driver reportedly broke several traffic violations around 1:20 a.m.

When cops tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver sped from the scene and traveled onto the Garden State Parkway northbound lanes.

Police say the vehicle left the highway near exit 144 and then led police through the West Ward of Newark. The males bailed from the car several miles away near the intersection of Godwin and Renner avenues.

Two other suspects ran from the scene and managed to escape capture. Police say the assailants are also wanted for trying to steal vehicles in Summit.

No injuries were reported.
