UPDATE: North Bergen Man Charged with Early Morning Newark Shot Fired Incident

Police in Newark are reporting the arrest of Mr. Larry M. Ortiz, 28, of North Bergen, for weapon possession in an incident that occurred today.

Police say shortly before 12:30 a.m., officers responded to the 100-block of Sherman Avenue on a ShotSpotter notification.

Police observed a man on a motorcycle driving away from the scene. Witnesses reported that a man on a motorcycle fired a weapon in the area of Miller Street and again in the area of Vanderpool Street.

Officers say they observed a man fitting the description of the suspect at Frelinghuysen Avenue and Empire Street.

The man ignored police commands to pull over and sped away, was also observed with a handgun police said.

The suspect, Ortiz, eluded police and was later observed lying on the street at North Broad Street and Newark Avenue in Elizabeth.

Ortiz was immediately arrested then charged with Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Eluding.

Police issued Ortiz six summonses for motor vehicle violations, including disregarding six traffic lights, careless driving, driving while suspended and reckless driving.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
