In a significant ruling on Friday, January 26, Union County Superior Court sentenced Malika Jones, a 26-year-old woman from Rahway, to a decade in state prison. She was found guilty of the aggravated manslaughter of her mother, as announced by Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Rahway Police Director Nicholas Breiner.
The conviction stemmed from a tragic incident on February 16, 2020, when Rahway Police Department officers were called to a residence on East Albert Street.
There, they discovered 58-year-old Inell Jones, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Malika Jones was arrested immediately.
The trial, which lasted three weeks, culminated in a guilty verdict on November 3, 2023.
Judge Thomas Isenhour handed down a 10-year sentence to Jones, stipulating that she must serve at least 85% of the term before eligibility for parole. Prosecutor Daniel expressed that while the sentencing doesn't undo the loss of Mrs. Inell Jones, it is hoped to provide some solace to the grieving.
He praised the efforts of Assistant Prosecutor Robert Grady and several Rahway Police Department officers for their diligent work in securing justice in this case.
