NJ Open Public Records Act Document Confirms Irvington Township Shooting

Irvington Township

The New Jersey Open Public Records Act -OPRA- has confirmed a shooting that occurred on an Irvington street in July.

Residents contacted RLS Media on the evening of July 13th, 2018 after they observed a bleeding male outside a house in the 500 block of Grove Street at around 8 p.m.

Emergency medical technicians were observed placing a person in the ambulance while police focused their attention in the vicinity of several homes at that location.

Multiple requests for general information that's usually provided by a city public information officer or media relations coordinator went unanswered by Irvington Township officials as residents fears increasingly grew on what occurred at the Grove Street location and if they were safe to continue normal living activities in the area.

An official request for information made through OPRA was sent to Irvington's City Clerk on July 14th and delivered on July 24th, 2018.

The documents, in the form of a redacted police report and Computer Aided Dispatch logs, showed that police responded to reports of shots fired with the first officer arriving at 5:09 Grove Street at approximately 8:44 p.m.

According to the report, this is where they found a male victim suffering gunshot wounds at that location according to police records.

EMS transported the victim to University Hospital in Newark where a spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said that he could not confirm a homicide investigation when we reached out on July 14th at 6:55 a.m.

According to the police report, police did not list required OPRA suspect information which indicates that there were no arrests made in the shooting.

The investigation into the shooting remains active and ongoing.
