NJ Man Charged in Teaneck DWI Crash

Authorities in Bergen County announced the arrest of 55-year-old Tobias Aparicio Cruz of Bogota, on charges stemming from a DWI Assault by Auto accident.

Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella stated the arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Jeff Angermeyer, and the Teaneck Police Department, under the direction of Chief Andrew R. McGurr.

According to Bergen County officials, on Saturday, February 14, at approximately 11:16 p.m., the Teaneck Police Department responded to multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting that a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle on Cedar Lane near the Teaneck Cinemas.

Officers arrived to find that a 2005 Nissan Sentra, operated by Tobias Aparicio Cruz, struck a 53-year-old male from Teaneck, BCPO officials said. The pedestrian was transported by ambulance to HMH Hackensack University Medical Center with serious injuries, where he remains hospitalized.

During the investigation on scene, responding Teaneck Police Officers took Tobias Aparicio Cruz into custody for suspicion of driving while intoxicated, BCPO officials stated. Accordingly, the Teaneck Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit based on the victim’s serious injuries.

Bergen County officials said detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office, accompanied by investigators from the Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force, responded to the scene and initiated a joint investigation with the Teaneck Police Department into the crash.

As a result of the investigation, Tobias Aparicio Cruz was arrested and charged with one count of third-degree assault by auto, and cited for related traffic offenses, which included DWI, Bergen County authorities said.

Tobias Aparicio Cruz was transported to the Bergen County Jail pending his first appearance inBergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, according to Bergen County officials.
