A 52-year-old New Jersey man has been sentenced to a decade in state prison after authorities said he attempted to sexually assault a nurse while being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
According to information released by Atlantic County authorities, Melvin Bishop was sentenced Tuesday, September 1, to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
He must serve 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole under the No Early Release Act.
Bishop will also be required to register as a sex offender under Megan’s Law and will be subject to parole supervision for life.
The case stems from a November 26, 2024 incident while Bishop was detained at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
Authorities said Bishop entered the nurse’s office for a medical examination and then made sexual advances toward the nurse.
Officials said Bishop chased the victim and ripped at her clothing in an attempt to sexually assault her.
The nurse managed to get away and hide until law enforcement officers arrived and arrested Bishop.
Bishop had previously been arrested on May 9, 2023, after Atlantic City Police responded to the Tropicana regarding a report of a defiant trespasser. Police said Bishop was found in possession of cocaine.
On October 23, 2025, Bishop pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted sexual assault and third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
