A Gloucester County emergency medical technician has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing cash from a patient while responding to a call for help, authorities announced.
According to Gloucester County Prosecutor Andrew B. Johns, 44-year-old Antoni Simmons of Glassboro has been charged by criminal complaint with fourth-degree theft by unlawful taking.
He was released on a summons and is scheduled to appear in New Jersey Superior Court on September 4, 2025.
The incident occurred on April 30, 2025, while Simmons was working as an EMT for Gloucester County. He had been dispatched to a medical emergency in Newfield when the alleged theft took place.
Investigators say that during the response, Simmons was seen on surveillance video rifling through the victim’s purse and removing approximately $220 in cash.
The victim reported the missing money later that same day, prompting an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit. The surveillance footage ultimately led to charges being filed against Simmons.
If convicted, Simmons faces up to 18 months in prison and a potential fine of up to $10,000, as fourth-degree theft carries those maximum penalties under New Jersey law.

Prosecutor Johns extended his gratitude to the Franklin Township Police Department and Chief Matt DeCesari for their role in assisting the investigation.
The case remains ongoing, and Simmons is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
