Authorities identified the driver as Mark Boyd, 45, of East Orange.

The incident occurred on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at approximately 2:10 p.m., following a pursuit that began in the Meadowlands area and ended in Essex County.

According to a preliminary investigation, state troopers attempted to stop a stolen 2024 Acura TLX near the Meadowlands Sports Complex and American Dream Mall.

The vehicle fled, traveling southbound on the New Jersey Turnpike before continuing westbound on Interstate 280 and exiting onto Freeway Drive in Orange.

Once on Freeway Drive, the Acura collided with a civilian vehicle, described as a black Mercedes-Benz.

Troopers then positioned their patrol vehicles around the Acura in an attempt to stop the driver.

Body-worn camera footage reviewed by investigators indicates that an apparent gunshot was heard coming from the area of the Acura, prompting one trooper to warn others to take cover.

The vehicle then reversed into a marked and occupied New Jersey State Police vehicle before accelerating forward.

Several troopers discharged their service weapons, striking the Acura multiple times.

Boyd exited the vehicle and fled on foot, leading to a pursuit involving NJSP Detectives Andre Almeida and Robert Keller. During the foot chase, authorities say Boyd and troopers exchanged gunfire, and Boyd was struck.

Troopers secured Boyd at the scene, requested emergency medical assistance, and began rendering aid.

He was transported to University Hospital in Newark, where he remains hospitalized for treatment.

Investigators later determined that Boyd had active arrest warrants in an unrelated matter. A firearm was recovered in the area near Boyd following the shooting.

One state trooper, who was inside the marked patrol vehicle struck by the Acura, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Attorney General’s Office also identified the state police members who discharged their firearms during the incident.
